Peacefully located in the beautiful hills of Andalucia, just outside an old village with bars, restaurants and shops. Our private villa is set in 2 acres, with its own pool and is just 15 mins. from a large town and 20 mins. from the coast.

ABOUT THE PROPERTY:

Private villa peacefully located in the hills of Andalucia. Large grounds, own pool, sleeps 6.

Introduction
Nestled in the mountains below the Sierra Tejeda Nature Reserve, is the picturesque Andalucian village of Canillas de Aceituno; 50 mins. from Malaga and 1hr30 from Granada airports. The villa is 2 mins.from the village, 15 mins from a big town, 20mins to the coast and roughly 1hr 30 to the magnificent Alhambra in Granada.

Things to do
For a restful holiday but close to the coast and tourist attractions, this is the place for you. You can wander around the hills, visit the ‘bat cave’, passing an old mill and pool, or swim also in fresh mountain water in the Sierra Tejeda Park.
Within 30 mins. you can visit awesome caves at Nerja, and find aqua park, horse riding, go-karting, golf, pedalos, jet-ski, wind-surf, scuba and restaurants galore.
A little further away visit the old town of Antequerra with castle and olive-oil museum, see 1000’s of flamingos in Fuente de las Piedras, watch and eat fresh trout at Rio Frio and bathe in hot springs at Alhama on your way to Granada, with its magnificent Alhambra Palace and skiing. Malaga (old town and newly opened Picasso Museum, Ronda, Seville, Cordoba, Marbella and Gibraltar are also all within reach.
Of course you can always go nowhere…in spring listen to hoopoo, frogs and nightingales, find wild flowers, smell the orange blossom; in summer swim in the pool, sunbathe, or sit in the shade of the carob tree, hear the goats and sheep, with their bells, as they meander across the hillsides and watch shooting stars by night.

The Villa
Our villa has 3 bedrooms (1 double, 2 twin), lounge, dining area, kitchen and bathroom.
It is simple and unpretentious, with high vaulted, beamed ceilings, pine doors windows and shutters. It is well equipped and simply furnished. There are terracotta patios to the front and beside the private swimming pool, (the front one shaded by a traditional large carob tree) and a large rear patio with flower beds growing wysteria, honesuckle, tradiscantia, hibiscus and a wonderful mimosa tree.

POOL:

The private pool measures roughly 7X4m. Around it is a terracota terrace with parasol, sunloungers, garden bench and a BBQ. It is walled on 3 sides and is sheltered by olive trees, bamboo, bougainvillea, apricot and cultivated plants.
From the pool and terrace you can gaze up the highest mountain in the area (after which our villa is named) - La Maroma, which can have a dusting of snow in winter, or you can look across to the orange groves and vineyards.
There is a pool shower which drains to the plants. (To prevent the pool sides from becoming grimy, it is important to showere before swimming.)

GARDEN:

The villa stands within about2 acres. The immediate area around the villa is planted. The rest is natural and contains olive, fig, citrus, peach, almond, eucalyptus, mimosa, pomegranate, bamboo and native broom. KITCHEN:

The kitchen is well equipped with cooking and tableware, including electric kettle, toaster, sandwich maker, food processor and coffee maker. There is a 4-ring gas hob, a combination convection/grill/microwave oven, a fridge/freezer, an iron and board, and all the necessary cleaning equipment.

LIVING/LOUNGE AREA:

The dining area has a large extendable table and six chairs. You will find games, cassettes, CD’s and a CD/tape/radio, an information file and many books. We have elected to have no TV, for greater relaxation and sociability and there is no telephone.
There are two gas heaters and a fire (although you may still find the villa cold in bad weather if you are used to central heating).

BEDROOMS:

There is 1 double and 2 twin bedroom, all with large built-in pine wardrobes.
The rooms have high sloping, beamed ceilings and all windows have both shutters and exterior blinds.

CLEANING INFORMATION:

The villa will be cleaned before and after, but not during, your stay. If you are staying for 2 weeks, an extra set of linen will be left out for you.

As Andalucia is a naturally arrid area, we have chosen to use water economically. For this reason we do not have a washing machine or dishwasher. We frankly find that in summer at least, very few clothes are needed other than swimware, however if you do need laundry done, Heather, our caretaker will probably be prepared to help out for a modest charge. Our water from the kitchen is diverted to irrigate the bamboo and pomegranates at the end of the pool, water expelled from the pool during cleaning is piped to eucalyptus and more bamboo and the pool shower drains to irrigate the apricot and bougainvillea at the other side of the pool wall. ('Al fresco' showering in summer therefore is strongly suggested - the water is already warm, you irrigate the garden and catch the wonderful mountain scenery all at the same time!)
An iron and board, and all the necessary cleaning equipment is provided, but parties with young children, please be aware that cleaning products are not locked away.

There are some toys and pool toys for the children which you are welcome to use (but please store away when you leave).

Location.
Nestled in the mountains below the Sierra Tejada National reserve, is the picturesque Andalucian village of Canillas de Aceituno, an hour from Malaga airport and 25 mins. from the coastal resort of Torre del Mar. The village has typically Moorish layout with narrow, winding streets of whitewashed houses, decorated with bougainvillea, jasmine and geraniums. On the hillsides you will see olives, almonds, citrus, figs, vineyards, white triangles which form headstones for raisin drying beds and a light dusting of white buildings.
There are various explanations for the name of the village. One states that Canillas de Aceituno, owes its name to two civilisations: the Romans named it ‘Canillae’, which means ‘an area of small canes’, and the Moors added ‘Al-Zaytun’ meaning ‘dyed natural silk’, because the village produced a lot of good quality silk.
Our villa is just outside Canillas and is reached by a 2km road (nearly all tarmac but the last 100m rough), passing the boundary of the reserve. It has views onto vineyards, citrus groves and natural hillsides. The majestic peak of Mount Maroma, which is occasionally snow-capped, stands 2065m above. We call our villa “Bajo la Maroma”, (beneath Maroma).
If you are looking for a restful holiday but wish to be handy for the airport and the coast, this could be the place for you. The buzz of the coast, is within twenty-five minutes drive. You can wander around the local hills, visit the ‘bat cave’, ‘Cueva de la Fajara’, (take torch), passing an old mill and pool. Another place for a dip is a five-minute walk into the Sierra Tejada, from the road to Sedella. There is a series of 5 guides, which describe many other walks in the local area.
You can visit the old town of Antequerra with its castle and newly opened olive-oil museum. See 1000’s of flamingos in Fuente de las Piedras (seasonal), watch and eat fresh trout at Rio Frio and bathe in hot springs at Alhama on your way to Granada, with its magnificent Alhambra Palace (book in advance) and Sierra Nevada Ski resort (generally open Nov – April). Ronda, Seville, Cordoba, Marbella and Gibraltar are also all within reach.
Within 30 mins. you can visit awesome caves in the pleasant resort of Nerja, an aqua park, go horse riding and go-karting on the old road to Malaga, just outside Torre del Mar or play golf. At the coast, you can find pedalos, jet-ski, scuba, windsurfing and restaurants galore. Torrox costa and Torre del Mar, both have promenades with restaurants but for a more dramatic coastline with steep cliffs, visit La Costa Tropical, between Nerja and Almunecar. Although most beaches can be reached only on foot, El Canuelo, has a mini-bus service from June to September.
If you prefer to stay away from it all, then the inland area is littered with tiny, whitewashed villages and bars just waiting to be explored.
Of course you can always go nowhere…in spring listen to hoopoo, frogs and nightingales, find wild orchids, grape hyacinths and irises, smell the orange blossom; in summer swim in the pool, sunbathe, or sit in the shade of the carob tree, hear the goats and sheep, with their bells, as they meander across the hillsides and watch shooting stars by night.
