With a new gondola lift that has replaced a minibus ride up to the ski slopes of Todorka, in recent years Bansko has become increasingly popular with British and Northern European skiers looking for something a bit different to the traditional Alpine resorts at a significantly lower cost thank other ski resort of equal quality.
Huge investment has been made in a brand new skiing area in Bansko which now has has the best snow record and the longest ski season. With plenty to do for all ages, there is more than snow sports on offer here with various entertainment and places to eat and drink in plentiful supply. An Ian Woosnam designed golf course is soon to be opened. Although best known as a ski resort, Bansko is also host to the traditional summer Jazz Festival, Bulgarian Folk Festival and other cultural events.
Situated near the river Glazane, Bansko got its name from the old Bulgarian word 'ban', which means 'master'. The Holy Trinity Church with its 30 m highball tower and clock is well worth a visit. The region is famous for its cuisine and colourful folklore and opportunities.
