Bellapais
Perhaps best known for Bellapais Abbey - an attractive ruined monastery built by monks of the Premonstratensian order in the 13th century from where you can admire the panoramic views down to the coast.
Located at the foot of the Besparmak mountains, in beautiful surrounding countryside, Bellapais is a picturesque village with many unique shops along the narrow streets that give the traditional Cypriot feel.
Attention was brought to this village by Laurence Durrells who made Bellapais his home between 1953 -1955 and authored the book 'Bitter Lemons', where he mentions drinking coffee under the Tree of Idleness, an old tree in the small square, which has today become the symbol of Bellapais village.
