Paphos
The capital of Cyprus' western region, Paphos is a small charming coastal town in the southwest of Cyprus popular with English, German and Scandinavian tourists. The countryside around it is some of the most beautiful on the island.
With a history which goes back literally thousands of years, to the 4th century B.C, attractions in Paphos include its ancient mosaic floors, beautiful old harbour, modern hotels and restaurants, situated along the promenade. From the modern town centre to the picturesque harbour lie a whole host of ancient sites which is no doubt why Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of the world's heritage. Other sights include an archaeological museum, the Byzantine castle of Paphos, Tombs of the Kings, St. Paul's Pillar, Sea Caves monasteries such as Ayios Neophytos and Chrysoroyiatissa with modern day pilgrims, and the birthplace and centre of worship of Aphrodite- the goddess of love and beauty.
Bordered by a lovely coastline, the Paphos area has charming villages in its mountains, where much of everyday life has gone unchanged over the years.
Compared with its neighbouring towns, Paphos can be slightly cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Beach and water activities like paragliding, jet skiing, diving and water skiing are in plentiful supply.
A year round municipal bus service between the airport and Coral Bay runs six times daily between 8am and 6pm. In upper and lower Paphos there are now over 15,000 guest beds but the resort does become popular in the summer seasons and you would be wise to book your accommodation well in advance of your stay.
