Monmartre

Located in the 18th arrondissement, and topped by the large and white-domed Sacré-Coeur Catholic basilica, Montmartre rises out of the flatness of Paris with its myriad of small cobbled streets and leafy stairways that scale La Butte (the hill) up to the Sacré Coeur.

One of the highest points in Paris, with the views to prove it, Monmartre still keeps a very subtle and unique atmosphere in spite of the affluence of tourists from all over the world. . The other, older, church on the hill is Saint Pierre de Montmarte, which claims to be the location at which the Jesuit order of priests was founded. The community on the hill is also called "Montmartre".

The final flourish on the tourist trail is le Momartrain, a small train that creeps between the quartier’s main sights as far as the Moulin Rouge in neighbouring Pigalle. Since the release of the hit movie Amélie, Monmartre has seen an increase of American tourists and rising property prices. Even the less popular areas of the Goutte d’Or and Château Rouge aside Montmartre are beginning to arouse the interest of property developers.
