Vence has long attracted artists. English writer D H Lawrence died here in 1930.
Vence, "City of Art", is a lovely town sitting in the fresh air of the hills only a few km from Nice and Antibes. Surrounded by a ring of hills with splendid views down to the Mediterranean over Antibes and Cagnes-sur Mer, the town is full of flowers.
The old town is entered by the Porte de Peyra, beside the place du Frene, named after its giant ash tree planted to commemorate the visits of King Francois 1 and Pope Paul III. The adjoining 16th century castle of the lords of Villeneuve, seigneurs of Vence, houses the museum and the Fondation Emile Hughes, named after a former mayor, holds many temporary exhibitions.
The town’s cathedral, one of the smallest in France, stands by the site of the forum of the Roman city of Vintiuim.
