Undoubtedly the most celebrated seaside in Europe, the lure of the French Riviera has, for many years, attracted the rich and famous who come to this holiday playground where even the seriously rich do not stand out in the crowd.
French Riviera
The French Riviera or Côte d'Azur (blue coast) is situated in the Provence region of France on the South east coast on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, at the border with Italy. Some of the most visited holiday resorts in Europe can be found on this 110 kilometres stretch, including the popular resorts of Monaco, Antibes, Nice and Cannes which offer plenty of glitz and glamour. You will be spoilt for choice if you are looking for pretty towns and villages to visit. Mougins is particularly appealing as is the Île Ste. Marguerite, which you can visit by a 20 minute ferry ride from Cannes. This unspoiled island is lined with bougainvillea paths with lovely views of the sea.
Easily accessible, there are plenty of direct flights to Nice from most major destinations. When there, the road networks are fast and efficient. The A8 from Italy runs inland parallel to the coast. Grasse and Cannes are linked by a regular bus service and bikes can be hired at some of the railway stations.
As well as the beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere, the French Riviera offers a broad range of about a hundred museums and over 150 art galleries.
Winston Churchill was a regular visitor to the French Riviera and wrote his memoirs while staying in Coco Chanel's villa.
