Bernkastel-Kues
Located on the Middle Moselle river, its many half-timbered buildings, colour-washed with steep roofs and gables, include the Renaissance city hall which dates from as early as 1608, and surround the old market place (Marktplatz). Perhaps the most well-known is the very narrow "Spitzhäuschen" – meaning the "Pointed House" which was built in 1416.
At the centre of the market square stands St. Michael's Fountain, (St. Michaelsbrunnen) which flows with wine during the annual September wine festival, and overflows with revellers who arrive from all areas to take part in the festivities.
Split into twin villages on opposite banks of the Moselle, Bernkastel-Kues is a pretty location which offers something for everyone. For a fantastic view of the whole Rhineland and Moselle areas, Burg Landshut, the ruins of an 11th century property, is situated on a rocky promontory towering above the city, to the southeast of the town – easily reached by a walk through leafy vines.
Bernkastel-Kues offers good transport links and the nearest rail station is the Wittlich Hauptbahnhof, 20km (13 miles) west, with a bus or taxi connection to Bernkastel-Kues
