Palermo
Palermo is the principle city of the region of Sivily and was founded in the 8th century by Phoenician tradesmen. It was built around a fine natural harbour and is widely considered as the most conquered city in the world due to its privileged position in the Mediterranean.
Today, Palermo has a population of over 700,000 and is one of the fastest growing cities in Italy. It is the richest in terms of monumemts in whole Italy and is the main centre of Norman architecture in Europe.
One of the most important attractions in the city is the Norman Cathedral, originally built as a mosque and converted to a cathedral at a later date. Palermo is surrounded by beautiful scenery and villages including the much visited Monreale with its stunning views across the bay.
Wandering through the town itself you can identify the various buildings from the different civilistaions who, at one time, have called Palermo home. The Sicilian people love their food, so look out for the local sweet specialities in one of the the many cafes and pastry bars!
