Italian Alps

Set against the backdrop of jagged white peaks stretching through the clouds, the Alps are increasingly popular with mountain climbers and those enjoying skiing and other snow sports and there is no shortage of activities to suit all tastes. The best ski resorts are in the Valle d’Aosta, within the shadows of Mont Blanc however for the not so adventurous, many visitors are attracted to the Christmas markets – a time when the town of Trento plays host to six weeks of festivities in its ancient town centre and cobbled squares.

Also popular with walkers who flock to the Alps between July and September, accommodation in the Italian Alps is plentiful and ranges from five star hotels to ski chalets and apartments accessed by the many train or bus routes, but the international cable car connection over the mountains from Chamonix is by far the most spectacular way to enter the region and is an experience in itself.

The mix of cultures in the Italian Alps means that four languages are spoken here (Italian, German, French, and Ladin), the largely French influence being extended to many of the street names.

The Gran Paradiso National Park is a fantastic experience with its spectacular waterfalls, cliffs and lush vegetation.
