Lake Orta is the least well known of the Italian lakes making it a very pleasant but not over-crowded summer holiday destination.
Lake Orta
At the west of the Lake Maggiore in the northern Italy and previously known as "Cusius", the surface of the Lake is about 18 km2 and the maximum depth is 143 metres.
The area around Lake Orta has always been attractive to tourists and this is due partly to the quiet beauty of the landscape, its wealth of artistic treasures and Baroque architecture as well as its fascinating history.
An excellent base for touring this area has to be the charming, car-free town of Orta San Giulio.
