Lunigiana

Its mild climate makes it a perfect location for restful holidays. Known for its high mountains, medieval hill villages, stunning scenery and good food and wine, the Lunigiana allegedly gets its name from the port of Luni, established by the Romans at the mouth of the River Magra. However, some believe that its name derives from the crescent-shaped outline of the Magra river valley and it resemblance to a moon (Luna, in Italian).

Distinct from the rest of Tuscany in many ways, this quiet, historical region of Italy is encircled by the Appennines and the Alps Apuane (from where Michelangelo insisted that his marble had to come). It is within easy reach of the coastal resorts of Lerici and the Cinque Terre and the cities of Pisa, Genoa, Florence and Parma.

Lunigiana is an historical territory of Italy, and is scattered with castles built in mediaeval times by the Malaspina family. During the Middle Ages, there were 160 castles in Lunigiana, the majority of which have now fallen into ruin.
