Fuengirola
The beach resort of Fuengirola is just twenty minutes from Malaga airport, 18km down the coast from Torremolinos. Most famous for its five miles of sandy beaches, including the European blue flag beaches of Boliches - Gaviotas and Torreblanca, Fuengirola is particularly popular with Spanish nationals, many of whom own summer apartments here.
Offering all the facilities to be expected of a major tourist centre - hotels, restaurants, bars, discotheques, sports clubs, a yacht harbour, etc, there is certainly no shortage of things to do for holidaymakers . Although a comparatively developed resort Fuengirola does also have a number of historical sites and open parks. The old port is still used by the local Spanish fishermen.
There is also an excellent selection of supermarkets and competitively priced shops, not to mention the large and lively street market on the coast on Tuesdays.
Family fun activities are in plentiful supply and range from the aqua park, the zoo and a host of sea sports. The zoo was modernised in 2001 to feature "tropical-forest" dwellings andspecialises in captive breeding for endangered species, chimpanzee-group research and tropical-forest education.
