The cathedral here was started in 1528 by Diego de Siloe and is one of the most prominent buildings of the city showing a bizarre mix of styles due to the various architects working on the cathedral over centuries. The half-built second tower, abandoned in 1765 when funds ran out, gave the cathedral its nickname : 'La Manquita' (the one-armed one).

Malaga's former Museo de Bellas Artes is being adapted to house a new Museo Picasso, displaying the works by the native artist. The Casa Natal de Picasso, where the painter spent his early years, is now the Picasso Foundation.

Malaga's vast Alcazaba was built between the 8th and 11th centuries. A partially excavated Roman ampitheatre stands by its entrance. On the hill directly behind the Alcazaba are the ruins of the Castillo de Gibralfaro, a 14th century Moorish castle.

As well as being a cultural centre, there is no shortage of places to eat out in Malaga. The locals love their food and the bars and restaurants here are where the real social life takes place.
