You enter the city through one of the two town gates the Portal de Moll, with two square towers and two massive palm trees standing guard, is the symbol of Alcudia.
Divided into two distinct parts, Port d’Alcudia lies to the south by the harbour, but the place of more historic interest is the old town of Alcudia, with much of the town still enclosed by its medieval walls. Outside the walls is the Roman capital of Pollentia. If you arrive by car there is a large parking area just outside the walls, in front of the parish church and Roman Pollentia’s remains can be seen across the road.
Alcudia takes its name from the Arabic ‘al-kudia' (the town on the hill). The Romans recognised the strategic importance of this site and established it as their capital after their conquest of Mallorca in 123BC.
After a long period of neglect, recent years have seen the rebuilding of the medieval walls, pedestrianisation of the old town’s streets and the restoration of several facades.
