It is busy in Las Ramblas around the clock especially in the evenings and weekends. The Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter)contains the cathedral and a maze of streets and squares. The compact Gothic Cathedral with a Romaneque chapel began being built in 1298 although it was not completed until the late 19th century.
The dramatic glass-fronted building, home to the Museu d'Art Contemporani, was designed by the American architect Richard Meier. Located on the Placa dels Angels, the permanent collection of predominantly Spanish art is enhanced by temporary exhibitions from foreign artists.
One of Barcelona's most popular attractions is the Picasso Museum which is housed in five adjoining medieval palaces on Carrer Montcada. Opened in 1963
the Museum shows works of Picasso to the strength of 3000 pieces, some of which show his early work painted during his teenage years.
