Costa Blanca

It is made up of the provinces of Alicante and Murcia with parts of Valencia and Almeria also contributing to its variety.

Geographically, it is clearly split in two: the northern half being dominated by mountains that form a dramatic backdrop to the coastal towns and villages while the southern half features flat salt and sand deposits punctuated with picturesque palms.

Alicante, the main tourist airport serving the region is one of the busiest in Spain with regular flights departing from more than twenty UK and Irish locations.

If you are collecting a hire car at Alicante, and then set off for your villa for the first time, the important thing to remember is that if you turn right out of the airport you go north and turn left for south. You will soon be on the motorway that whisks drivers up and down the coast with tremendous efficiency. Once at your destination, using the coast road make the journey much more interesting for seeing this very varied and attractive coastal region.

There is a collection of historic coastal towns in the northern end of the Costa Blanca all worth visiting: Denia, Javea and Calpe being three.

Denia is watched over by a medieval castle looking down on the old fishing port of Baix la Marand les Roques. The once quiet fishing port is now a major retirement area for people all over Europe, making it a fascinating, if slightly aged, cosmopolitan community. Consequently, there are plenty of places to eat out and enjoy the climate and the coast.

There are fine white sandy beaches both north and south of the main town while inland the entire coast is protected by the Sierra de Montgo mountains.

Naturally water-sports area a feature of the Costa Blanca and wherever you choose to stay there will be a great choice of sailing, windsurfing, motor cruising, paragliding and jet-skiing.

For those not so keen on water but more attracted to the greens, you will never be far from a golf course. If this is your thing beware that your English spiked shoea may not be welcome here as they can be a bit abrasive on the rather more delicate surface. Also remember that the dress code is equally as important as here at home. Just because you are on holiday don't let your standards drop on the golf course! Tailored shorts, collared shirts and socks are the order of the day.
