Gran Canaria

Only 47km/29 miles wide, the north is usually cooler than the sometimes fiery heat of the south and the island's breathtaking beaches entice holidaymakers back year after year. Gran Canaria has something for everybody.

The main tourist area is concentrated on the south of the island - Puerto Rico and Playa Del Ingles are the main resorts and the entertainment hotspots are all centred around the commercial centres. Playa Del Ingles has a buzzing beach which gives way to the gorgeous glittering sand dunes of Maspalomas. Its capital is "Las Palmas de Gran Canaria", although generally referred to as simply "Las Palmas".

Home to Spain's fifth busiest airport (and by far the busiest airport in the Canary Islands), Gran Canaria caters for all age-groups and holiday preferences whether it’s relaxing in the sun, trying out a new watersport or sampling the hectic nightlife with the 18-30 crowd. There are however quieter resorts, which offer a more relaxed ambience and attractions for both singles, families and couples.

As far as culture is concerned Gran Canaria offers it in abundance. The cathedral at Las Palmas, the rum distillery at Arucas or even the most sacred spot of the island, Teror, all are well worth a visit in between topping up you tan! The popular beaches, with their calm shallow waters and convenient facilities may get crowded, but the stunning sand dunes of Maspalomas provide secluded spots for sunbathing, making this area a favourite spot for nudists.
