Kaº

It was founded by the lycians and the name for Kaº in the lycian language was Habesos or Habesa. The importance of this small fishing town was comfirmed by the presence of one of the richest Lycian Necropolis.

The Ancient Greeks then gave Kaº a name Antiphéllos or Antíphilos as it was the harbour of the large city of Phellos which stood in front of it. Antiphéllos was known for its cork and oaks and in the roman period, exporting sponges and timber put Antiphéllos on the map.

The writer, Pliny the Elder refers to Antiphéllos in the fifth book of a collection he called “Naturalis Historia”. After 395ad, Antiphéllos became part of the Eastern Roman Empire.

In 1839, Kaº was such a small town that the famous Charles Fellows (English Archaeologist) had to venture to nearby island of Castellorizo to buy chickens to eat. These days the people of Castellorizo come to Kaº on a Friday to buy their chickens from the Friday market. The Harbour is now filled with yachts and scuba-diving boats that make trips to the sunken city of Kekova and the Blue Cave. The waterfront is now full with hotels.
