Fethiye
Located 135 kms southwest of Marmaris, Fethiye is a medium sized, pretty market town and agricultural centre which fringes a sheltered bay where you can get a real sense of Turkish life. Popular with tourists, especially during summer, its large harbour and crystal-clear waters along the shores make Fethiye an ideal location for deep-sea and scuba diving. The harbour also makes a pleasant place to spend an evening and the pedestrianised old town is a reasonable place to shop for those holiday souvenirs!
Primarily a working town, holiday facilities here range from the resort sprawl of Calis, just north of the town, to the upmarket Hillside Beach Club, home to an annual water skiing competition. The road to Fethiye winds up and down hills through a heavily forested region that offers occasional glimpses of the sea. Belcegiz Bay is also worth a visit and provides natural mountain scenery.
Known for its rock tombs, carved into the faces of the cliffs by the Lycians, modern Fethiye stands on the ruins of the Lycian city of Telmessus. Earthquakes in 1856 and 1958 levelled most of the ancient edifices, which included a temple of Apollo but a Roman theatre near the harbour survived.
