Just 18 km from Bodrum, and only a few minutes drive in the west of Yalikavak Gundogan, (ancient Farilya), was once an important fishing centre, whose major economies are now agriculture and tourism. . The old Greek name 'Farilya' means 'Sunrise' and can be seen on some signposts in the area.
One of the least known holiday resorts on the peninsula, it is a quiet, peaceful and unspoiled place with clean and enjoyable beaches. Its wide range of hotels are very welcoming and the many cafes and restaurants provided a good selection of local food.
Speaking volumes for Gundogan is fact that many high level members of the diplomatic service, active and retired, have made it their summer retreat.
Gundogon rightly claims to have been one of the earliest human settlements on the peninsula. A fascinating destination across the bay is Big Rabbit Island (Küçük Tavsan) with its still standing remains of a Byzantine monastic settlement, provisionally dated to the 9th century A.D, clearly visible on top of the hill.
Gundogan bay, which is one of the longest in Bodrum peninsula, is very attractive to enthusiasts of sailing, surfing, sponge diving and underwater photography. Holding a perfect location, situated among the tangerine, olive and pine trees, its challenging, unpredictable winds and currents make it a paradise for the experienced watersports enthusiast.
