Llandudno
Llandudno falls naturally between the headlands of Little and Great Orme. It is Wales's largest resort, and is home to the award winning beaches of North Shore and the quiet, sand-duned West Shore.
Originally just a collection of fishermen’s cottages, Llandudno is a delightful place that was developed in 1850. With its crescent shaped bay, Llandudno has kept its Victorian and Edwardian charm and splendour, despite its modern attractions. Its cheerful seaside atmosphere owes much to its strong sense of Victorian roots. Its pier which is more than 700m long has canopied walkways recall the heyday of seaside holidays.
Llandudno was planned around a pleasant layout of wide streets and of course, the Promenade, which was the essential feature of a resort from the 1800’s. The Promenade is lined with renovated, redecorated and elegant hotels and the wide boulevard gives the elegance of the French Riviera.
Visitors are inevitably drawn to the pier which juts out into Landudno Bay, with views back to the limestone cliffs. A permanent Punch and Judy show can be watched on the Promenade close to the Pier that, in 1914, the Suffragettes attempted to burn down during their fight for the right of women to vote.
Proud of its association with Lewis Carroll, the writer of the Alice in Wonderland series, The Alice in Wonderland Centre is a grotto decorated with life-sized scenes from his books.
Great Orme’s Head, now a Country Park and Nature reserve, rises to 207m and has a long history. In the Bronze Age, copper was mined here and the copper mines and their excavations are open to the public.
There are two effortless ways to reach the summit on the Great Orme Tramway - one of only three cable-hauled street tramways in the world or by the Llandudno Cable Car. Both operate only in summer.
