BRECON

A beautiful area with dramatic scenery, varied wild-life and an intriguing past

Brecon Beacons National Park

The Brecon Beacons National Park covers 520 square miles, over half of which is 1,000 ft above sea level, from the Wales-England Border almost all the way to Swansea. With the lowest profile of Wales’ three national parks, the Brecon Beacons are the destination of thousands of urban walkers.

There are four mountain ranges within the park – the Black Mountain (singular). This remote almost wilderness like location, to the west, contains one of the finest ridge walks anywhere in England or Wales encompassing the Carmarthen Fans. Fforest Fawr, (meaning 'Great Forest', the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains (plural) are to the east.

Much of the area consists of high, open country with rounded, spongy hills of grass and rock tumble peppered with lakes and villages.

Visitors can enjoy many outdoor pursuits, from fishing in the many reservoirs to pony trekking, caving and walking.

Getting around the National Park is not easy. Nearby Abergavenny is the only town with a train station, although Merthyr Tydfil, on the southern part of the park, is well connected by rail to Cardiff.

Pen Y Fan is the highest point in South Wales and reaches 2,907 ft above sea level (886 metres). It’s distinctive, flat-topped summit was once a Bronze Age burial ground.
