The Lake District of Cumbria lies between the Scottish borders and Durham North Yorkshire, Lancashire and Northumberland. Postcard-perfect it is the largest of the National Parks in England, with breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, market towns and charming sleepy villages - the Lake District is by far the most spectacular.

A popular holiday spot in the Victorian era, the Lake District or Lakeland as it is known, is famous for its mountains (or fells) and lakes which include, Haweswater, Bassenthwaite Lake, Ullswater and, the largest lake in England, Lake Windermere, which is popular amongst water sports enthusiasts. For a better look at the surrounding area, a boat trip on Lake Windermere is a must.

The central area is popular with walkers from those embarking on a gentle hike to the more adventurous who seek a challenge on some of England’s highest mountains. The Cumbrian Way offers some of the area’s more challenging walks.

Fondly associated with early 19th century poets, Keswick museum holds manuscripts by Wordsworth, Ruskin and others while the art gallery displays works by Turner and other famous artists.
