Created millions of years ago when Europe and North America began to move apart, the sheer variety of interesting locations in the Scottish Highlands make touring around extremely worthwhile.
Scottish Highlands
Scotland's famous Highlands and Islands make up one of Europe's last great wilderness areas and opportunities to enjoy walking are in plentiful supply - from the many coastal paths, to full-scale mountain expeditions. Ben Nevis which lies in the Lochaber region, is the highest mountain in the British Isles and is very popular with serious climbers.
The area is generally sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges dominating the region creating some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery. Rich in cultural heritage and historical background, many come here to seek information on their ancestors, or visit the many castles and other historical sites.
The towns of Aviemore and Glencoe are particularly popular in winter, with skiers and snowboarders. The area is also a magnet for wildlife enthusiasts with Puffins, Buzzards, Golden Eagles and Osprey being seen in the area.
