The only Antebellum home left in southern Florida

Gamble Plantation

The mansion, which dates back to 1845-50, was built by Major Robert Gamble, who was a successful sugar planter. It is located near Bradenton.

The plantation did cover 3,500 acres, but the area is somewhat smaller today. The furnishings in the house are just how they would have been years ago.

There is a small museum in the visitor centre, one document on display showing that Gamble sold the plantation in 1856 for $190,000 to pay off mounting debts.

Busch Gardens

Safari rides offer the chance to see zebras and giraffes, lions and gorillas, which make up some 2,600 animals at Busch Gardens.

There is also a dolphin show and various types of birds in the bird gardens include cockatoos and macaws.

As well as these attractions, Busch Gardens has thrilling roller coasters, and nearby is Adventure island, a water park.

Providing a pleasant respite from the hustle and bustle of the city

Hillsborough River

The various types of wildlife that live in the cypress and mangrove trees along the river include turtles, alligators and herons.

The area is located about 15 mins. from Tampa, and the best way to view the wildlife is by an organised canoe trip.
