The Bahamas is an English-speaking tropical island chain in the Caribbean Sea, popular as a tourist destination.
A 100,000-square-mile archipelago extending over 500 miles of the clearest waters in the Caribbean region and powder-white beaches, the beautiful Bahamas begin sixty miles east of the Florida coast.
Its 700 islands, each having its own diversity, include uninhabited cays and large rocks. The Bahamas gets its name from the Spanish, baja mar, meaning 'shallow sea'. Its friendly people operate a slow moving pace of life which is pleasantly infectious. Each island has its own character, with beaches strewn with pretty seashells and homes for its 300,000 inhabitants painted in soft pastel shades – peace and tranquility is easy to find.
Since attaining independence from the UK in 1973, The Bahamas have prospered through tourism in recent years. Aside from the hotel and tourist areas, the opportunity to disappear into a mangrove forest, or explore a coral reef is within reach.
