A country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania and a number of other islands in the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans, Australia is a beautiful country, known as the land down under because it is below of the equator.

A continent and a country, Australia is affectionately known for its koalas, crocs and barbies but it has so much to offer, not least its remarkable natural beauty that varies from sunbaked horizons to dense tropical rainforests to densely-populated coastal strips with long beaches and coral reefs off the shoreline.

Found initially by the British in 1788 and named Sydney by the convicts that settled there, Australia is a fine place to visit at any time of the year. For the water-sports enthusiast, Australia is a paradise particularly in their summer (December to February) which is great beach weather. Winter (June to August) offers skiing in New South Wales, Victoria and sometimes Tasmania. In spring and autumn the weather is mild.

With a population of 21 million, Australia is neighboured by Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, and New Zealand to the south-east.
Scattered throughout the country, Australia’s cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide share the majority of the population and all have an enthusiasm for art, food and sport.
